European Feature Film Co-Production Fund

This is a European co-production grant for fiction, documentary, and animation feature films of at least 70 minutes. It supports producers working across member countries and can provide funding in the form of a subsidy or a soft loan.

This fund supports feature-length international co-productions in fiction, animation, and documentary. To qualify, the film must have a minimum runtime of 70 minutes and be structured as a formal co-production between eligible countries.

The project must involve at least two co-producers from different member states. It is designed for producers who are already building a real international finance and production structure, rather than a single-country project looking for additional support.

Key requirements include:

  • At least two co-producers from different eligible member states
  • A minimum runtime of 70 minutes
  • Fiction, documentary, or animation feature film format
  • A co-production structure that meets the required financing shares between majority and minority producers

For multilateral co-productions, the participation of the majority co-producer cannot exceed 70% of the total budget, and each minority co-producer must contribute at least 10%.

For bilateral co-productions, the majority co-producer cannot normally exceed 80% of the total budget, and the minority co-producer must contribute at least 20%. In bilateral projects with a budget above €5 million, the majority participation may go up to 90%.

Applications are reviewed in stages. First, the project is checked against the formal eligibility rules. If it qualifies, it is then assessed by independent external experts using the fund's published selection criteria.

The fund runs three calls each year. Support may be awarded as a subsidy or as a soft loan. Where support is given as a soft loan, repayment is usually linked to the revenues generated by the film.

This is best suited to producers with a clear co-production structure, confirmed partners, and a serious financing plan already taking shape.
